Adirondack Great Camps, Rustic Tradition Talk Near Schenectady

New York State’s Adirondack Park, a six-million-acre mixture of public and private lands, is the largest park east of the Mississippi River. Sixty percent of the region’s lands are constitutionally protected as “forever wild” and these lands include vast forests, hundreds of mountains, thousands of lakes and ponds, and miles of wild and scenic rivers.

During the late 19th century, the region became a mecca for sportsmen and other people seeking recreation and revitalization in the wild places of the region. In response to this, native builders and professional architects developed a rustic style of architecture that is best represented by a series of building complexes known as Great Camps. New Director Announced for Great Camp Sagamore

Great Camp Sagamore in Raquette Lake has announced the hiring of Emily Martz as the organization’s next Executive Director, beginning on April 1, 2019.

Great Camp Sagamore Director Garet Livermore Stepping Down

Garet D. Livermore has announced that he is stepping down as Executive Director of Sagamore Institute of the Adirondacks in Raquette Lake, NY effective April 1, 2019.

Livermore is returning to his home in Cooperstown, NY to work as a consultant to museum and non-profits throughout the Northeast as well as on historical writing projects.

Prior to becoming the Executive Director in 2013 Livermore had a long association with Sagamore starting in the 1980s when he visted to cross country ski during the winter program season. He later served two terms as a board member and as a regular “Mountain Music” participant and hiker in the Historic Great Camps Special Management Area that surrounds Sagamore. Cemetery Preservation Program Planned At Camp Sagamore

gravestone Great Camp Sagamore will hold a two-day presentation on cemetery and gravestone restoration on Tuesday, September 27th, and Wednesday, September 28th.

For many people, cemeteries are sacred sites, locations that not only provide spiritual comfort for both the living and the deceased, but also help communities maintain connections with their collective cultural history. Over time, however, many small cemeteries fall into disrepair and decay, as loved ones move on and communities grow. For its part, New York State is home to thousands of neglected or abandoned cemeteries, many of which are technically the responsibility of their surrounding communities. Adirondack Philosophers’ Camp Talk In Saratoga Springs

The Story of the Philosophers CampIn 1858 some of the leading lights of American art, literature, and science camped together on Follensby Pond near Tupper Lake at what is now known as the Philosophers’ Camp.

The gathering was organized by Willam James Stillman, artist and editor of acclaimed art magazine of the time, The Crayon. It included transcendental philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson, the poet James Russel Lowell, Harvard scientist Jean Louis Agassiz, and others.

MANY Museum Institute To Focus On Advocacy

Great Camp SagamoreThe Museum Association of New York (MANY), the only statewide organization that works as both a hub for the state’s museum community and a powerful voice for the advancement of art, history, science and children’s museums, as well as zoos, botanical gardens and other cultural organizations, announced today an all-new Museum Institute at Great Camp Sagamore in Raquette Lake, NY.

Taking place September 21-24, this year’s Museum Institute features new reduced rates and a theme that focuses on advocacy. The group of presenters on hand will provide knowledge about what works, and what doesn’t, when it comes to advocating for your institution, from the CFA process to meeting with local, state and federal policy makers.
