Holiday Open House at Clinton Co Historical

The Clinton County Historical Association (CCHA) is set to hold its annual Holiday Open House on Saturday, December 7th, and Sunday, December 8th, from 10 am to 3 pm each day.

‘The Raid,’ St. Albans Civil War Raid Film Showings

the raid posterPlattsburgh based film preservationist and archivist Andy MacDougall will co-host two screenings of his personal 16mm print of The Raid on Friday and Saturday, July 19th and 20th at 7 pm at the Clinton County Historical Museum, 98 Ohio Ave, in Plattsburgh.

During the Civil War, what is today known as a secret “terror cell” was briefly established in the North Country by Confederate soldiers. The 1954 20th Century Fox motion picture The Raid is based on this event and opens with a prison break in Plattsburgh by Confederate prisoners who, after escaping across the Canadian border, plan to rob banks in St. Albans, Vt., and set fire to the town. Sunday on Valcour Island, Lighthouse Tours Set For July

The Clinton County Historical Association will host “Sunday on Valcour Island” on Sunday, July 14th, 2019.

The day include tours of the historic Bluff Point Lighthouse on Valcour Island. The trip requires the physical ability to disembark and board from the island’s natural landing, walking on uneven surfaces over rough terrain and climbing stairs. Clinton County History Conference Set For Saturday

Clinton County, NY Map 1856A Clinton County History Conference has been set for Saturday, June 22, 2019 from 9 am to 3 pm, at the Beekmantown Town Hall, 571 Spellman Road, West Chazy.

The conference will is planned with historians and interested members of the public in mind. Topics will include preserving historic buildings, erecting historic markers, encouraging heritage tourism, safely preserving grave stones, and local genealogy. Northern Slavery: Part of the American Story

The Clinton County Historical Association has announced “Northern Slavery: Part of the American Story,” a lecture looking at slavery in New York, has been set for Thursday, February 21, at 6:30 pm.

Slavery is not just a southern story. In fact, New York was the epicenter of slavery in the early colonial world. From Boston to Plattsburgh, and up and down the Hudson and Mohawk Valleys, enslaved persons were an important part of the labor market and helped build wealth in the society. Bluff_Point_Light_on_Valcour_IslandThe New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has issued a Draft Lake Champlain Islands Management Complex Unit Management Plan (Draft UMP) in compliance with the Adirondack State Land Master Plan. The plan includes a number of historic and recreational sites.

Walking Tour of Plattsburgh’s Old Base Sunday

Plattsburgh Old BaseThe Clinton County Historical Association (CCHA) will be partnering with City of Plattsburgh Historian, John Krueger to offer walking tours of Plattsburgh Old Base.

Starting the tour with the 1609 discovery of Lake Champlain, the tour will explore Lake Champlain’s vast military history that led up to the Battle of Plattsburgh, which paved the way for what is known today as the Plattsburgh Barracks/Post or, as to most locals, the Old Base.
