Long Island has a long and complicated history with alcohol stretching back to the first Dutch settlers. From early distilleries and breweries on the western end of the Island to the emergence of temeperance societies in Sag Harbor, alcohol has played a continuing role in the life of the people.
The culmination came in 1920 when Prohibition went into effect. For the next thirteen years, the manufacture, sale and distribution of intoxicating liquours was probibited. Until Prohibition was repealed in 1933, Long Island was in for a wild time as rum runners vied with the coast guard, police raided speakeasies, and every person had to decide for themselves how they would handle the challenges and opportunities that arose. AIn the 19th and early 20th century most towns of any size in the Mohawk Valley had their own local brewery. The Utica-Rome area has been home to well over 40 breweries since 1801. Two factors played a major role in the industry. The opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 significantly lowered transportation costs for brewing supplies and finished beer. Also, hop growing became a huge industry in Central New York during the second half of the 19th century.
These two factors resulted in booming commerce with New York and Pennsylvania generating 85% of the beer produced in the US in 1860. The great “social experiment” of Prohibition made the manufacture and sale of alcohol illegal and from 1920 through 1933 and the thriving industry was crippled, with only a handful of breweries surviving. Beer historian Craig Gravina is set to speak on the history of beer brewing in New York State on August 27 at 6:30 pm, at the Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site.
Gravina will talk about the history of the brewing industry in the Hudson Valley and include its close connection with the Mohawk Valley, including the Erie Canal and grain production in the valley and as well as other interesting personalities and events. The 2019 Madison County Hop Fest Tour on Sunday, September 15th, will feature exemplary architectural structures that demonstrate the four components of 19th century hop processing, as well as provide new sites of the county’s hop heritage.
Visitors will get to enter the hop houses, see the elements and tools, smell the hop aroma saved in the timbers, and hear the explanations of the processes. The tour will include many “windshield viewings” of other sites included in the 2006 Bicentennial Hop Heritage Trail and in the Cultural Resources Survey supported by a grant from the Preservation League of New York State in 2006. The Rome Historical Society is set to host food and beverage writer Don Cazentre on Wednesday, June 19th. Cazentre will share his research on the Mamie Taylor and other Upstate-connected cocktails in his book Spirits and Cocktails of Upstate New York: A History.
Upstate New York has held its place in cocktail history for centuries, beginning with the term “cocktail” itself. The word first appeared in an 1806 Hudson Valley newspaper, when an editor described a cocktail as “a stimulating liquor composed of spirits of any kind – sugar, water, and bitters – it is vulgarly called a bittered sling and is supposed to be an excellent electioneering potion, inasmuch as it renders the heart stout and bold, at the same time that it fuddles the head.” [Read more…] about Spirits and Cocktails of Upstate NY Program in Rome

The Bronck Museum is set to offer guests a “tavern experience” at 7 pm on Saturday, August. 25th.
The Bronck houses will be transformed into a mid-1600s country tavern where costumed volunteers will serve guests a beer specially prepared by Crossroads Brewery in Athens to replicate a beer offered at Pieter Bronck’s Beverwijck tavern. During most of the 1650s Bronck and his wife Hilletje Jans were involved in brewing and keeping just such a tavern on the river front at Beverwijck (today’s Albany).
