Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, located at 20 Sagamore Hill Rd, Oyster Bay, Long Island, has invited the public to a free day of outdoor activities on Thursday, July 4th.
Attendees can see Theodore Roosevelt, performed by Joe Wiegand, as he greets visitors throughout the day, and take part in family friendly activities from noon to 4 pm.
At 2 pm, the main program will begin with speeches and a performance from the Calliope Brass Band. There will be an equestrian reenactment of the First United States Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, “The Rough Riders,” at 12:30 pm, including a call for recruits where young volunteers will receive their enlistment papers. Arts and crafts, as well as old-fashioned games that the Roosevelts played will be available. There will be vendors on site to offer food, including lemonade and ice cream.
Sagamore Hill NHS will be fee-free during Independence Day. Viewing Theodore Roosevelt’s home will be first floor only during the fee-free period. Guides will be posted in the home to provide an informative experience. Photography and video recording is not allowed inside the house. Bags, packs, and strollers will not be permitted in the historical home during the tours — plan accordingly. There will be no ATM available onsite.
